While healthcare is in our name, our roots are in the nuclear power industry and our methods are based on the best practices of high reliability organizations that “get it right” in safety. Healthcare historically has focused on traditional process improvement as a means to better outcomes. In contrast, high reliability organizations – such as nuclear power and aviation – recognize that optimizing outcomes requires a concurrent focus on human behavior accountability.
Our approach focuses on preventing human errors and detecting and correcting system weaknesses that can lead to events of harm and unwanted outcomes. We began working with early adopters in healthcare in 2002. As application in healthcare grew, HPI evolved with a vision and mission focused on changing the culture of the healthcare industry.
We have led comprehensive safety culture improvement in over 200 hospitals across the United States. Our clients include single hospitals, integrated health systems, long-term care providers, and medical group practices. Results include significant reduction in event rate, number of suits and claims, and professional liability expenses. Clients have received national recognition for their achievements in quality and safety (including the AHA/McKesson Quest for Quality Prize, the John M. Eisenberg Safety Award, and the ISMP Award for Excellence in Medication Use Safety.
