In 2004, colleagues from Memorial University Medical Center and Sentara Healthcare gathered at the Mulberry Inn in Savannah, Georgia for a day of sharing approaches and lessons learned from experiences in safety culture improvement. The experience was a powerful one and accelerated the efforts of both organizations. Hospitals and health systems have continued to gather for an annual Safety Summit ever since.
The Safety Summit is a by-invitation forum of members of the HPI client community that share a common goal of creating a reliability culture that results in ZERO events of harm. While the gathering has grown in size, the spirit of Safety Summit remains the same – all share, all learn.
Since Memorial Health, the event has been hosted by
2005 Sentara Healthcare in Norfolk, Virginia
2006 OhioHealth in Columbus, Ohio
2007 Inova Healthcare in Fairfax, Virginia
2008 Community Health Network in Indianapolis, Indiana
2009 Scottsdale Healthcare in Scottsdale, Arizona

Safety Summit 2011 will be hosted by Spectrum Health & Helen DeVos Children’s Hospital in Grand Rapids, Michigan.
