Saint Thomas Hospital is a 541- bed adult specialty hospital providing care to the more than two million residents of Middle Tennessee, Southwestern Kentucky, and Northern Alabama. Saint Thomas Hospital (STH) is part of Saint Thomas Health Services’ regional health system consists of five hospitals – Baptist and Saint Thomas Hospitals and the Center for Spinal Surgery in Nashville, Middle Tennessee Medical Center in Murfreesboro, and Hickman Community Hospital in Centerville – and a comprehensive network of affiliated joint ventures in diagnostics, cardiac services and ambulatory surgery as well as medical practices, clinics and rehabilitation facilities.
STH initially began working with HPI in 2006 in an effort to introduce new behavioral expectation components to existing process improvement efforts. In FY 2007, the program began rolling out to all leaders, medical staff, and associates. By the end of 2010, the hospital had realized a reduction in Serious Safety Event Rate (SSER) of over 84% while Associate Engagement and Net Promoter Scores (measuring patient satisfaction) over the same time period continue to improve and exceed previous all-time highs.
Based on the early program results, the program has since been adopted by Ascension Health as a strategic initiative that is currently being rolled out to 67 hospitals nationwide. Saint Thomas Health System is a member of Ascension Health, a Catholic organization that is the largest not-for-profit health system in the United States.
